    Surrounding Areas
Tooele is a small city with about 31,600 residents. It is located 45 minutes outside Salt Lake City in a fairly remote area of the state, in the valley of the Oquirrh Mountains. Off-post housing is also available within half an hour of the depot in the towns of Grantsville, Stansbury Park, Stockton, and Erda, and slightly further out in Rush Valley. Salt Lake City, the state capital and largest city, is named quite literally for nearby Great Salt Lake. The city is situated at 4,200 feet elevation and is well known for being the headquarters of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. The communities of Magna and Burmester are also nearby.

    About the Installation
Tooele Army Depot stores, issues, and renovates conventional munitions. The depot provides support to the Deseret Chemical Depot as well as serving as the National Inventory Control Point for ammunition peculiar equipment. Tooele Army Depot is located in Tooele County, Utah, and the workforce is comprised primarily of civilians. Sierra Army Depot recently transferred the ammunition storage function to Tooele Army Depot as part of the Base Realignment and Closure initiative of 2005.

In 2010, Tooele Army Depot gained notoriety by becoming the first Army base to install a wind turbine to generate energy. The 262-foot-tall wind turbine generates over 1.5 megawatts of energy per year which saves several hundreds of thousands in energy costs. The wind turbine is the first step in the Army's effort to find renewable energy solutions and to continue to "go green" in the future.
